Overture: Re-visiting this Old House
隱藏在府城巷弄的這棟四樓半和洋共構洋樓,是當時二戰後初期改建於臺南僅次於林百貨的第二高樓-赤崁璽樓。
Chi Kan West House is a four and a half-storied blue building hidden in a narrow alleyway of the prefectural city of Tainan. It is a blend of Taiwanese and Western architecture. When stage one was constructed in 1924 it was one story tall but in 1953 stories were added to become the second tallest building in the city, Hayashi Department Store being the first.
老宅重見,一對夫妻的用心與無私,不僅小心翼翼保存著七、八十年的歷史,並以台式異國蔬食—赤崁璽樓餐廳,讓府城人重見老宅的昔日風光,一個孝心的故事,得以遠播、代代相傳。
This old house is now being revisited because of the diligence and selflessness of a couple. Together they not only carefully preserved its 94-year history, but also brought traditional Taiwanese and foreign vegetarian fare to the table with the Chikan Royal Seal Restaurant on the first two stories. Now this prefectural city’s inhabitants can see the heyday of Chi Kan again, hear the story of filial piety, and broadcast it, handing down the tradition generation to generation.
璽樓阿嬤高齡八十好幾,一般的食物不只難咀嚼、消化,亦常沒有胃口。為了激發阿嬤的食慾,璽樓夫婦特別製作阿嬤愛吃、又易入口的「薄皮厚餡」福祿壽鳳梨酥。福祿壽鳳梨酥內餡以臺灣在地的土鳳梨為基底,外皮則使用法國麵粉、口感鬆軟,不僅入口即化、也更好消化,是老中少三代齊聚一堂都適合的飯後茶點。
The Grandma of Chi Kan West House is well over 80. To her, most food is difficult to chew, hard to digest, or she’s not hungry at all. To stimulate Grandma’s appetite, the couple came up with the Fu Lu Shou Pineapple Shortcake that Grandma loves to eat because it is “thin on crust and thick on filling” and easy for her to chew. The main ingredient of Fu Lu Shou Pineapple Shortcakes is local Taiwan pineapples. The crust is made of French flour, unique for its soft texture. It is not only delicious but also easy to digest. Pineapple Shortcake is the best after-dinner dessert that three generations of a family can enjoy.
